Velveeta Substitutes: Best Homemade and Store-Bought Options

Cheese has always been a regular ingredient in most recipes as it adds a certain creaminess and richness to any dish. Plus, it’s also commonly used in dips and sauces.

The cheese of choice for many would be Velveeta. Since this processed cheese has a very soft and smooth texture, it is considerably easier to melt than other cheeses.

But if for some reason you find that it’s not available, we have decided to provide you with a suitable Velveeta substitute.

Well, you only need to continue reading to find the best substitutes for Velveeta, and we’ll also share an easy recipe for homemade Velveeta cheese.

So let’s dive straight into it!

The 5 Best Velveeta Substitutes

1. Sharp Cheddar Cheese

People looking for a more organic and tried-and-true cheese to replace Velveeta can use Cheddar.

Cheddar has long been used in cooking and melting. Its melting point is low enough to make appetizers like grilled cheese sandwiches, nachos, and even simple sandwiches with the cheese used as a dip.

Now I know you may be concerned about Cheddar’s texture being different from Velveeta’s but there’s no need to worry as it will not affect your cooking.

The unique thing about Cheddar is its pungent smell and sharpness, especially in the sharp Cheddar cheese variety.

These attributes make it perfect for most meals and add its own unique aroma to the final product.

2. Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese

For those of you who enjoy a bit of zipping and tanginess in your food, the Extra Sharp Cheddar cheese will be most appropriate.

As you can imagine, in this variety its sharp taste and pungent smell are accentuated even more than the sharp cheddar.

Plus, it is even better for melting. In fact, when melted this cheese can turn into an incredibly soft and creamy dip, as good if not better than a Velveeta dip, for all types of appetizers.

Due to its sharpness, it is especially delicious when added to quesadillas, chili, tacos, and nachos.

3. Pepper Jack

Spice in food is an acquired taste, not everyone prefers it but those who do, prefer it in abundance.

If you’re one of those people who are looking to add a little bit of spice and sting in their food in addition to cheese that melts like Velveeta, then you cannot go wrong with Pepper Jack.

Though, this specific one may not be as soft as Velveeta and hence a tiny bit harder to melt

However, trust us when we tell you that its sweet peppers, rosemary, and chili flavor will more than make up for its longer melting time. As it is a spicy cheese, it is mostly used in burgers, quesadillas, etc.

4. Cheez Whiz

Cheez whiz may be the other most popular after Velveeta. This is why we would recommend that out of all the substitutes, you go with Cheez whiz.

Cheez whiz is primarily made of wheat, sodium flavors, and oil along with substances that introduce that distinct yellow color into the cheese. The only real cheese that comes to mind similar to Cheez whiz would be Cheddar due to them both having that yellowish color as well as similar taste and flavor.

Nonetheless, you can easily replace Velveeta with this in almost all recipes. In addition, we would argue that for dips and sauces the richness of Cheez whiz will be a welcome change for you and your guests.

Moreover, Cheez whiz can be an excellent substitute for Velveeta in macaroni and cheese as well as crackers and sandwiches.

5. American Cheese

Out of all the cheeses mentioned in the list, American cheese may be the closest in texture and flavor to Velveeta cheese.

This cheese has a soft and smooth texture which makes it almost as easy to melt as Velveeta itself. However, what differentiates American cheese from the others including Velveeta is its saltiness.

This makes it perfect for savory dishes that require a bit of extra salt for that added bit of flavor.

Unlike the other options, you can use this instead of Velveeta in all the recipes that require it without any significant change in taste.

All you’ll need is some mild cheddar cheese, gelatin, milk, and cream cheese. The choice between white or orange cheese is yours to make as the finished product should satisfy you the most. So here are the steps for homemade Velveeta cheese:

  1. First,  add 1 cup of water to a saucepan and bring it to a boil.
  2. Add ¼ teaspoon of salt, 1/3 of a cup of milk powder, and ¼ ounce of gelatin into a blender and pulse.
  3. Insert the Boiled water from the saucepan into the blender and quickly pulse a couple of times.
  4. Afterward, add 4 cups of grated mild cheddar cheese into the blender and blend until smooth.
  5. Next, as quickly as you can transfer the mixture into a pan lined with plastic wrap.
  6. Then cover the mixture with the leftover plastic wrap and put it inside the refrigerator for multiple hours or overnight if possible.
  7. Use the cheese however you see fit, though always remember to wrap again in plastic wrap and insert inside the refrigerator after use.

Wrapping up!

Velveeta may be easier to cook with, as well as richer and creamier than other cheeses but using it for a long time can be harmful to your body.

The undesirable preservatives and their processed nature is not an ideal choice for your health in the long run.

So experiment around with these Velveeta substitutes until you can find the perfect replacement to satisfy your taste buds!
